Attention, Alumni! (XS Sports Center)

Dear Xavier Alumni,

The following letter about the construction of the Xavier School Sports Center was issued by our School Director, Fr. Johnny C. Go, S.J.

Please note that the deadline for submission of company profile/letter of intention has been extended to August 15, 2003.

Sincerely yours,
Frederick N. Tiu
Director for Alumni Relations

August 3, 2003

Dear Fellow Xaverian,

As you know, Xavier School is constructing a new Sports Center to replace the Grade School Gym. The proposed Sports Center is envisioned to be more than just a place for our Grade School students’ athletic activities. Just like the old gym, it will also be the venue for the important assemblies and events of the school. Moreover, it is hoped that the new building, with its state-of-the art sports facilities and equipment, will
become a center of gathering for our parents and especially our alumni—in other words, for the Xavier Community.

We would like the Sports Center to be truly a project of Xaverians for Xaverians. We want it to be a showcase of the talents and gifts of our alumni. For this reason, from its very inception, we have already decided that as far as possible, only our alumni will be involved in the various aspects of the project: from its design, its construction, the materials, and the various other services.

We have completed the design phase of the project. We opened the invitation to alumni architects, and a total of eleven participated in a competition that exhibited the creative genius of our alumni. After a difficult and careful process that involved consultation with the various sectors of the Xavier Community, the project has been awarded to Mr. Jonathan Gan (Xavier Class`84).

As we prepare for the construction of the Sports Center, we would like to invite you to be part of the project. A careful and transparent process is currently being designed to enable us to select the general contractor, the sub-contractors, and the various other suppliers. A Construction Committee headed by Fr. Santos Mena, SJ has been formed to oversee the project, including making the recommendations on the choice of those who will be involved. The recommendations will be made only after consultation with the AAXS President, Mr. Samson Lim (Xavier Class `81).

If you are interested in participating in the project, please send us your company profile and/or LOI (Letter of Intention) indicating what materials or services you can offer.

Send the above information to Ms. TONETTE ESPINA of the Central Purchasing Office not later than August 8 (Friday). Tel No. 7230481-95 loc 413. Fax No. 7241049. Email: tonette@xs.edu.ph

Thank you very much for your attention.

Fr. Johnny C. Go, S.J.
School Director

Kudos to XS Batch '83 Foundation

Xavier School and its Alumni Relations Office congratulate XS Batch '83 Foundation for successfully staging the screening of "Terminator 3" last July 12. The fundraiser is one of the Batch's projects to generate funding for its numerous worthy causes.

"The Batch '83 Foundation is an unfolding story of how even the fewest of individuals can come together for significant works, how negative circumstances can inspire greatness, and how even the ripple of the most modest of contributions can rouse positive transformations in our society. Three years ago, 12 of us got together with a common desire to effect positive change to society. In memory of our classmates who have joined our creator ahead of us, we decided to dedicate and focus our endeavors on the youth sector", Arnold "Jing" Velasco, XS Batch '83 President, was quoted as saying.

Here in Xavier School, Batch '83 Foundation is known as the group that established the New Grade School Chinese Multimedia CenterGrade School Chinese Multimedia Center, a state-of-the-art computer center where students enjoy learning Chinese with the aid of multimedia. The group is also the proponent of the "Trikiting Center" whose aim is to keep the Philippines polio-free by 2005 through Acute Flacid Paralysis (AFP) Surveillance. Recently, Batch '83 embarked on the Adopt an Aeta Scholarship Program where 12 deserving Aeta children of the Subic and Porac area are being sent to school.

No less than Fr. Johnny Go, School Director, commended Batch '83 by saying, "We thank you for sharing the abundant gifts that you have received from the Lord. Most of all we thank you for making us proud of you-for being true Men for Others!

Xavier Opens the Alumni Relations Office

In its effort to further strengthen its ties with its alumni, Xavier School recently opened the Alumni Relations Office (ARO). The office is located at the former Auxiliary Services Office (across the Bookstore & Printing Office). The new office is tasked to institute programs and activities that would support the Xavier alumni. The ARO will not limit its role to the usual communication and social events but will also look into civic and spiritual activities to reach more alumni -- a fitting move by the school given its upcoming Golden Jubilee in 2006. The new ARO is headed by Fred Tiu (Batch '79) and is ably assisted by Bambi Chua.

The ARO is at your service Monday to Friday from 7:30am to 4:00pm. You can also get in touch with us at 723-0481 local 427 or email us at ftiu@xs.edu.ph. Do visit the ARO if you are in the vicinity!

We Remember Mrs. Carmen Tan

Mrs. Carmen Tan, 71 years old and former Grade School Math teacher, joined our Creator last June 14, 2003 . Many of us would remember Mrs. Tan because she taught in Xavier from 1959 until her retirement in 1995. She is survived by her husband, Tan Gey, 81, and her only child, Jowell (Batch '86). We join the whole Xavier community in condoling with the family of Mrs. Tan. And to you, Mrs. Tan, thank you so much for your dedication and for touching many of our lives.

11th Xavier Alumni Golf Cup - Congratulations, Batch '78!

Kudos to Batch '78 for staging the very successful 11th Xavier Alumni Golf Cup last June 6 in Tagaytay Midlands. The ARO represented the school in congratulating both the organizers and over a hundred alumni players. Amid the sumptuous lunch, the event gave the ARO its first major opportunity to introduce the new office to the alumni gathered. To Manny Acero, Dennis Tan, Philip Co, Anthony Sy, Jorge Ting and the other Batch '78 movers-you've just made it tougher for Batch '79 next year!

Alumni Retreat Anyone?

Remember those post-Christmas, pre-New Year retreats we used to have when Fr. Louis Papilla was still with us? The ARO is planning to revive the Alumni retreat and would like to know how many would be interested in attending. For those who are interested, please leave your contact info with the ARO.
