The XPlore Bicol 2024 experience offered a unique glimpse into the heart of Bicolandia, where nature, culture, and faith converge in remarkable ways. From adrenaline-fueled adventures at the iconic Cagsawa Ruins to heartwarming interactions with fellow students and local leaders, every moment was a celebration of Bicol\u2019s rich history and enduring spirit.

The journey began with an early morning flight to Legazpi, where the towering Mayon Volcano greeted Xaverians with its majestic, almost perfect cone. The group\u2019s visit to the Cagsawa Ruins was one of the most anticipated highlights, not only for the history it represented but also for the chance to explore the rugged terrain on ATVs. The group zipped across volcanic landscapes, exhilarated by the speed and the magnificent backdrop of Mayon\u2014an adventure that set the tone for the rest of the trip. As they paused to reflect on the ruins, the haunting beauty of the site, buried by Mayon’s eruption centuries ago, stirred thoughts about the resilience of the Bicolano people.

From the adrenaline of the Cagsawa adventure, the group found moments of serenity in the quiet beauty of Quitinday Hills and Lignon Hill, where sweeping views of the city and mountains reminded them of the harmonious blend of nature and urban life in Bicol. They also had the honor of meeting Legazpi City Mayor Carmen Geraldine Rosal, who spoke about good governance and the city\u2019s ongoing development, leaving the Xaverians inspired by her leadership and vision for the future of Legazpi.

Interaction with students from St. Agnes Academy in Legazpi was another key highlight, where the spirit of camaraderie and shared learning thrived. Engaging in meaningful discussions about culture, education, and the importance of community, the students from Xavier formed new friendships while gaining insights into the local Bicolano way of life. The same warmth and hospitality extended to their interaction with students from St. Joseph School and Ateneo de Naga in Naga City. These exchanges reminded the students of the unifying power of education and how it transcends geographical and cultural boundaries.

In Naga, the group was welcomed by Mayor Nelson Legacion, who shared insights on the city\u2019s rich history and its importance as a center of faith. His message of community empowerment resonated deeply with the Xaverians, particularly as they prepared to witness the Traslacion, a deeply spiritual event that is at the heart of Bicolano’s devotion.

The students witnessed the investiture of Fr. Aristotle Dy, SJ as the 5th University President of Ateneo de Naga University, a momentous occasion that highlighted the university’s Jesuit tradition and commitment to academic excellence, service, and leadership. This investiture was a pivotal event during XPlore Bicol 2024, adding a deeper dimension to their journey of cultural and spiritual discovery in Bicolandia.

Food was an essential part of the cultural immersion, and Bicol did not disappoint. From the famous Biggs Diner to the local flavors of Casa Soriano and Red Platter, every meal was a feast for the senses. The group indulged in traditional Bicolano dishes like pinangat<\/i>, laing<\/i>, and the fiery Bicol Express, each bite offering a taste of the region\u2019s rich culinary heritage. Desserts like biniribid<\/i> and the iconic chili ice cream added a touch of novelty to their dining experiences, with the students marveling at how the locals could combine the sweetness of ice cream with the intense heat of chili.

Of course, no trip to Bicol would be complete without partaking in the Traslacion<\/i> and visiting Our Lady of Pe\u00f1afrancia. They were moved by the devotion of the people, witnessing firsthand the vibrant and deeply rooted religious traditions that have shaped the region for centuries. The sight of the Traslacion<\/i>, with thousands of devotees walking in solemn prayer, was a powerful reminder of the enduring faith of the Bicolanos. The group\u2019s visits to several churches during the Visita Iglesia<\/i> further deepened their appreciation of Bicol\u2019s spiritual heritage, with stops at the Naga Cathedral and the Carmelite Monastery offering moments of quiet reflection and prayer.

In addition to these spiritual experiences, they also engaged in a meaningful environmental initiative in Calabanga. They participated in a mangrove planting activity, where they learned about the importance of mangroves in disaster risk management and environmental sustainability. This hands-on experience gave them a sense of responsibility towards the environment and highlighted the Bicolanos\u2019 commitment to protecting their natural resources.

As the trip wound down, there was still time for a bit of fun and relaxation at the Panicuason Hot Springs and Adventure Park. Here, amidst the natural beauty of the springs and waterfalls, the boys enjoyed a well-deserved break after days of exploration and cultural immersion. Their visit to the Camsur Watersports Complex added a touch of excitement to the final leg of the journey, rounding off a week filled with adventure, learning, and reflection.

The group returned with more than just memories of scenic views, exciting activities, and inspiring leaders\u2014they brought home a deeper understanding of the culture, the people, and the faith that make Bicol a region like no other.
