Decades later, that same light \u2014 <em>Luceat Lux<\/em> \u2014 continues to shine across continents, illuminating courtrooms, communities, and hearts in Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A distinguished alumnus of Xavier School, Winston recently received the <strong>King Charles III Coronation Medal (March 2025)<\/strong> \u2014 an honor granted to Canadians who have made significant contributions to public service and their communities. The recognition adds to his already remarkable distinctions: <strong>King\u2019s Counsel (K.C.)<\/strong>, a title bestowed upon senior lawyers recognized for excellence, integrity, and leadership in the legal profession; and <strong>Medal of Good Citizenship (M.G.C.)<\/strong>, the second-highest civilian award in British Columbia, conferred for outstanding community service and civic contribution. In 2023, he was awarded the <strong>Top 25 Canadian Immigrant Award<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over his three-decade career as <strong>Trial Crown Counsel with the BC Prosecution Service<\/strong>, Winston has prosecuted soe of the most complex and sensitive criminal cases \u2014 including vehicular homicides and crimes against children \u2014 always with a heart anchored in justice and compassion. Yet despite his many accolades, Winston remains deeply rooted in the humility and purpose he first learned at Xavier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img width=\"282\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.xs.edu.ph\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Portrait.Winston-Sayson.MGC_.2023.01.29-1-1-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-145821\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.xs.edu.ph\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Portrait.Winston-Sayson.MGC_.2023.01.29-1-1-1.jpg 282w, https:\/\/www.xs.edu.ph\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Portrait.Winston-Sayson.MGC_.2023.01.29-1-1-1-226x300.jpg 226w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 282px) 100vw, 282px\" \/><figcaption>Mr. Winston Lim Sayson was also awarded BC\u2019s Medal of Good Citizenship for his outstanding community service, one of 15 honorees recognized for their dedication.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong>Xaverian Roots<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Spanning from Kindergarten to High School (1968\u20131980), his years at Xavier formed both the direction and discipline of his life. \u201cThe Jesuit education I received there taught me that excellence is not measured merely by achievement, but by purpose anchored in service,\u201d he shared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He vividly recalls the school\u2019s vision: <em>\u201cMen (Persons) fully alive, endowed with the passion for justice, and the skills for development.\u201d<\/em> The mission \u2014 <em>\u201cLUCEAT LUX! Let your light shine!\u201d<\/em> \u2014 continues to guide his every endeavor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Early mornings of study, high expectations from teachers, and the quiet influence of retreats and masses instilled in him the truth that <em>\u201cacademic skills and knowledge without conscience are incomplete.\u201d<\/em> Xavier impressed upon him that integrity and compassion must always walk together \u2014 a conviction that became his moral compass in the courtroom, where truth, fairness, and justice meet daily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One memory stands out from his Xavier years \u2014 his class\u2019s outreach to Vietnamese refugees, known as the \u201cboat people.\u201d \u201cI remember meeting them in the camps, befriending the children, and speaking to them even though they did not know English,\u201d he said. That experience of empathy left a lifelong mark. His motivation was simple yet profound: to serve with integrity and ensure that justice was not an abstraction, but a lived reality for victims and the public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the course of three decades, he handled some of the most complex cases \u2014 from vehicular homicides to crimes committed against children and vulnerable victims. \u201cI learned that the law\u2019s power lies not in punishment alone, but in its capacity to protect the vulnerable and affirm human dignity,\u201d he reflected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His \u201cwhy\u201d has always been stewardship: to use the gifts and talents God granted him for the common good. \u201cEvery file, every trial, was an opportunity to serve with competence and compassion. Pursue excellence, but let your servant-leadership and humility guide your ambition. Be kind without being na\u00efve, and strong without being harsh.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He urges young Xaverians to combine skill with integrity, intellect with empathy, and courage with humility. \u201cIn every success, remember who you are and whose you are \u2014 that your gifts were given for service, not self.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And above all, he reminds them to hold fast to faith: \u201cIn my own journey, I have seen that true justice flows not only from law but from love \u2014 love for truth, for people, and for God.
